Description of Volunteer Roles

We are on a mission to raise the next generation of African innovators and you have the opportunity to be a part of this mission. Project iSWEST 2021 will run virtually in Ghana.

Volunteers would need to commit at least 7 hours per week (1 hour per day) for the 3-week period of the program. This is a volunteer role and hence there will be no payment given. However, volunteers will be provided with allowance for internet data on a need by need basis. There will be a training session the week before the program. All volunteers will be held to a high standard and are required to be committed to the program’s goals and treat everyone with respect

Project iSWEST Lead (Nsesa Executive Role)

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the smooth running of the program
  • Ensure prudent use of resources and finances to achieve program goals within budget
  • Ensure that all teams accomplish their assigned responsibilities

Monitoring and Evaluation Team

Lead Data Coordinator Responsibilities

  • Oversee the monitoring and evaluation team to ensure the right quantity (all students fill the surveys) and quality (accuracy and no mixups, right questions etc) of data is collected promptly
  • Draw a strategic plan for the collection, storage and maintenance of data
  • Supervise all monitoring and evaluation team members
  • Design and maintain all survey questionnaires
  • Generate summary statistics and graphs from the data responses
  • Write the final Project iSWEST Report in conjunction with the Lead Publicity & Media Coordinator
  • Any other duties assigned by the Project iSWEST Lead

Assistant Data Coordinator Responsibilities

  • Ensure that all surveys and questionnaires are promptly filled
  • Remind students of their weekly reflection essays 
  • Assist students with the filling of surveys where necessary
  • Administer weekly exit interviews 
  • Write daily reports of the program (logistics, teaching, challenges, highlights etc) 
  • Any other duties assigned by the Lead Data Coordinator

Requirements for Data Coordinators

  1. Knowledgeable about Nsesa Foundation’s vision and mission, and the goals of Project iSWEST
  2. Good working knowledge of the Google Drive platform (including Slides, Doc, Sheets, Forms etc)
  3. Experience with word processing and spreadsheet applications
  4. Excellent written communication skills
  5. Able to multitask and work under pressure
  6. Able to quickly learn and apply new concepts and ideas
  7. Strong analytical and problem solving skills

 

Publicity Team

Lead Publicity & Media Coordinator Responsibilities

  • Oversee the Publicity team to ensure wide and effective publicity of Project iSWEST
  • Supervise all Publicity team members
  • Draw a strategic publicity plan for Project iSWEST
  • Ensure proper video and graphic documentation of the Program iSWEST
  • Write press releases and maintain official media kit
  • Engage with media houses and bloggers to ensure wide coverage of Project iSWEST
  • Manage all public relations issues during Project iSWEST 
  • Write the final Project iSWEST Report in conjunction with the Lead Data Coordinator
  • Any other duties assigned by the Project iSWEST Lead

Assistant Publicity & Media Coordinator Responsibilities

  • Post regular updates of the program on our social media channels 
  • Engage with followers on social media channels
  • Create engaging content for social media channels 
  • Capture pictures and videos from the program
  • Collate pictures of judges, mentors, volunteers and facilitators
  • Coordinate with Nsesa’s Media Lead and Project iSWEST lead to create and share posters of the iSWEST team, facilitators, mentors and judges
  • Any other duties assigned by the Lead Publicity Coordinator

Requirements for Publicity & Media Coordinators

  1. Knowledgeable about Nsesa Foundation’s vision and mission, and the goals of Project iSWEST
  2. Excellent interpersonal skills
  3. Excellent and effective communications skills, both orally and in writing
  4. Familiar with Social Media engagement

Teaching and Mentoring Team

Role is for one of our two courses: Coding and Innovation

Lead Facilitator Responsibilities

  • Teach courses in an engaging, hands-on and timely manner
  • Supervise and guide assistant facilitators 
  • Coordinate and oversee live and online help sessions 
  • Provide feedback on curriculum and students’ performance 
  • Mentor students during innovation phase
  • Assign and grade exercises and assignments
  • Any other duties assigned by the Project iSWEST Lead

Assistant Facilitator Responsibilities

  • Support Lead Facilitators to teach courses
  • Assist students with assignments and examples to ensure effective understanding
  • Provide feedback on curriculum and students’ performance
  • Mentor students during innovation phase 
  • Grading exercises and assignments 
  • Any other duties assigned by the Lead Facilitator

Requirements for Facilitators

  1. Knowledgeable about Nsesa Foundation’s vision and mission, and the goals of Project iSWEST
  2. Lead and Assistant Facilitators are required to have expertise in one of the courses (Coding and Innovation) pertaining to the specific role. Refer to our press releases on past editions of Project iSWEST: 2014, 2017, 2018  to familiarize yourself with the content of these courses.
  3. Able to teach and coach students

Logistics Team

Lead Logistics Coordinator Responsibilities

  • Oversee the logistics team to ensure effective and timely provision of program information to students and volunteers 
  • Supervise all logistics coordinators
  • Ensure that all students and volunteers are present at sessions required of them
  • Ensure that program sessions start and end on time
  • Ensure availability of teaching materials and environments e.g. Zoom, Google Classrooms, etc
  • Ensure availability of teaching aids e.g. team docs
  • Ensure availability of reliable internet connection for the program
  • Coordinate provision of internet data bundles to facilitators
  • Record all daily expenses and report same to Project iSWEST Lead
  • Any other duties assigned by the Project iSWEST Lead

Assistant Logistics Coordinator 

  • Assist the lead logistics coordinator in performing duties
  • Ensure the learning environments are ready at the right times
  • Ensure that all students attend sessions and follow up with those that miss any
  • Assist in resolving issues logistical issues reported by students and volunteers
  • Any other duties assigned by the Lead Logistics Coordinator

1. Who should apply to be a volunteer?

We are looking for individuals who share in our vision and are passionate and committed to raising the next generation of African innovators. If this is you, then don’t hesitate to apply.

2. When is the deadline for applications?

The deadline for all applications is Saturday, 11th September, 2021. However, applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis so it’s best to apply as early as you can.

3. When will the decisions be announced?

Decisions will be communicated latest by Monday, 13th September 2021 via email

 4. How will volunteers be selected?

Volunteers will be selected based on responses to questions in the application form. Additionally, applicants for key roles may be shortlisted for online interviews ahead of selection.

5. What do I get for volunteering?

Volunteers will be provided with an allowance for internet data on a need by need basis. Volunteers will also receive certificates of appreciation and a Project iSWEST 2021 T-shirt. However, the most important thing you will get is the fulfillment of contributing to impacting the lives of young Ghanaians.
