Telling the stories of African women rocking it in STEM

STEM WOW is a project by Nsesa Foundation to tell the stories of young inspirational African women on the continent and in the diaspora who are rocking it in the field of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).

From January 2018, we have been sharing the stories of such women with over 100K people across the world on our website and social media pages.

We hope to inspire the next generation of female African Innovators, Scientists, Engineers and STEM educators with these powerful stories.

Meet Amanda Obidike, Executive Director of STEMi Makers Africa

Amanda Obidike is a Certified professional in STEM by the Open University (United Kingdom) and Executive Director of The Science, Technology, Engineering, Math and Innovation Makers of Africa (STEMi Makers Africa) where she created sustainable and implementable projects in underserved communities across 17 Sub-Saharan African countries. The goal is to prepare the next generation of Africans with STEM emerging opportunities to become experienced for Africa's workforce by 2030.

Meet Dr Dephney Mathebula, Senior Lecturer at the University of Venda, South Africa

Dr Mathebula was born at Muyexe Village in Giyani (South Africa). She had her basic education at Muyexe Primary School and Hatlani Muyexe High School. She is currently working at the University of Venda (UNIVEN) as a Senior Lecturer and supervises a number of postgraduate students. Dr Mathebula holds a BSc degree in Mathematics and Statistics (UNIVEN), BSc Hons in Mathematics (UNIVEN), BSc Hons in Biomathematics (Stellenbosch University), MSc in Biomathematics (Stellenbosch University) and PhD in Mathematics (UNIVEN).

Meet Dr Nabila Ahmed Rufa’L, Lecturer in Electrical Engineering at Bayero University Kano, Nigeria

Dr Rufa’I was born in September 1987 in the ancient city of Kano in North-western Nigeria. She completed her primary and secondary education in Kano before proceeding to Bayero University Kano for her undergraduate studies in Electrical Engineering. Upon graduation, she was employed as a Technical consultant on Renewable Energy Systems in a private company in Nigeria. She later enrolled in a Master’s program in Electrical Engineering and Renewable Energy Systems at the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom, where she graduated with distinction. Dr Nabila Ahmed Rufa’I graduated from the same University with a PhD in Electronic and Electrical Engineering in 2019.

Meet Lydia Gathoni, Data Scientist and an Applications Developer

Lydia Gathoni is currently working as a Data Scientist focused on using data to make predictive models and solving problems. She is a graduate of Kabarak University with a BSc. in Computer Science majoring in Software Engineering. She has over 4 years of experience in software development where she has worked on several projects and developed systems in various fields and websites.

Meet Grace Kago, PhD candidate in Cell and Molecular Biology University of Texas at Austin, USA

Grace is a Kenyan-American scientist who emigrated from Kenya to the USA when she was in middle school. In college, she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Biology with a Minor in Art History from McDaniel College (Maryland, USA). She is currently a doctoral student and National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellow in the Cell and Molecular Biology program at the University of Texas at Austin. She has presented posters detailing her research at various international conferences like the American Society for Cell Biology (ASCB) and Biophysical Society (BPS).

Meet Desireé Davies, Cyber Security Cloud & Applications Analyst at Vistra Energy

Desireé C. Davies is of Liberian descent and is currently residing in Irving, Texas. She is a Security Engineer at Vistra Energy. She is a member of the Identity Access Management /Application Security team involved in securing access to applications and systems, privileged access and ensuring timely creation/terminations of user accounts via automated integration between applications. An Honors graduate, she earned her Master of Science in Information Assurance and Security degree from Capella University.
